Frequently Asked Questions
So are your diapers really eco friendly?
-
YES! Without a doubt, EarthBaby offers the most environmentally responsible diapering solution available today. Period!
I have seen Nature Babycare diapers available from Diapers.com™ and now Target™. Is it ok if I buy my diapers from them and use EarthBaby for the composting?
NO. We cannot accept diapers that have been purchased from any other retailer. The only way we can control the integrity of what goes into our composting stream is to provide the diapers. In addition, EarthBaby offers free exchanges for larger size diapers as your baby grows.
My city offers curbside composting. Can I buy diapers from EarthBaby and put them in my green-bin/cart ?
NO. Please DO NOT put soiled diapers in your city composting bin! We are not aware of any municipal composting programs in the Unites States that accept diapers.
From an environmental perspective, how does EarthBaby's service compare to a cloth diaper service ?
-
Well for starters, EarthBaby's mission is; To eliminate disposable diapers and wipes from landfill. We are able to offer a diaper that is as convenient and dry as the best name brand disposables but without the need to dispose of soiled diapers in the garbage. That said, there are several ways in which our compostable diaper service has lower environmental impact than a cloth diaper service:
EarthBaby's composting process uses only a tiny fraction of the energy required to launder & dry diapers. As a matter of fact, it takes only 0.5 Watt-hour of electricity to fully compost one diaper (that's the equivalent of running a 60 watt household light bulb for 30 seconds).
For the purpose of comparison, the National Association of Diaper Services' website** states; "Diaper services launder diapers to rigorous public-health standards that you couldn't possibly match at home, with thirteen changes of water and high-temperature drying that eliminates bacteria." **Source: http://www.diapernet.org/howdoesitwork.htm
No water is used in the composting process and no detergents or chlorine bleach are used either.
Our diapers do not require the use of a diaper cover. This emilinates the need to launder at home which helps to conserve water and electricity (not to mention the costof buying the diaper covers).
EarthBaby's diapers are delivered in recycled kraft paper bags. These bags can be reused many times over and because they are compostable, they are also useful for collecting used diapers.
The process used by our composting facility is called "aerated static pile". This type of composting happens aerobically and no methane gas is generated.
Yeah, but I heard you do "hot-composting". What about the energy required to keep the compost pile hot?
-
There is zero electricity used to heat the compost. 100% of the compost heat is a by-product of the natural microbial breakdown of organic material in the compost pile.
What is the cost for the service?
-
A service fee of $29.99 (price includes sales tax) is charged every four weeks. This includes delivery, pick-up and composting of soiled diapers and wipes into safe, high-quality top-soil.
I don't get it, why do you charge sales tax on the service fee?
-
According to the California State Board of Equalization; All services that are associated with the transfer of tangible goods are taxable. This also applies to memberships, handling and/or shipping fees. Believe us, collecting and paying sales tax is a royal pain in the "diaper area", if we weren't required to charge it we wouldn't.
What is the cost for the diapers and wipes?
-
Our diapers are only $11.79 per pack (22-40 diapers depending upon the size) and our wipes are $3.59 per pack of 70.
What's up with the paper delivery sack?
-
We deliver our larger orders in recycled 30 gallon 2 ply paper bags because they are the most environmentally responsible solution we have been able to find. Smaller orders are delivered in a single ply grocery size paper bag (the small bag can not be used for collection as it will fall apart when wet - yuck!). Our customers then have the choice to:
- Fold the bag flat and leave it with their pick-up and we willl reuse the bag on a future delivery.
- Place soiled diapers in the 30 gallon bag (not the smaller grocery bag) and we'll compost the bag along with the diapers.
- Reuse the bag in their home; they are a great way to contain your green/yard waste or paper recycling.
What size diapers do you offer?
-
EarthBaby compostable diapers are currently available in sizes 1-6. We also offer toddler training pants in size 4-6.
What is your return policy?
We are happy to provide an exchange or store credit for UNOPENED packs of diapers and other babycare products. We do not offer refunds for products or services.
Is there an account set-up or termination fee?
-
No, there is absolutely no cost to open or close your account with EarthBaby. As a matter of fact there are no hidden fees at all. We charge a flat service fee (billed once every 4 weeks), reasonable prices on the products we sell and sales tax. That's it!
How do your diapers and wipes compare to traditional disposables?
-
We have worked very hard to provide our customers a compostable diaper that equals the name-brand disposable diapers in every way: comfort, fit, absorbency, convenience, etc. Just like disposables, our diapers have hook and loop closures and elastic gathers at the legs, making them both comfortable and leak resistant. The absorbent layer in our diapers contains a combination of natural unbleached FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood pulp and super-absorbent gel. Our wipes are 100% chlorine and fragrance free. We use them with our own children and feel that they are as good as anything we have used previously... except, of course, that all of EarthBaby's products are compostable and biodegradable.
What if I'm traveling or away from my home? -
We certainly recognize that our customers will occasionally travel outside of our delivery area for family vacations, and dealing with your diapers while away from home will be up to your personal preference. We recommend that you bring them home and add them to your collection bag for normal pickup. We offer convenient travel-sized, compostable storage bags for purchase in our store that are ideal for this purpose. Alternatively, you may choose to dispose of them in the municipal trash collection as you would with traditional disposable diapers. If you are going on vacation be sure to enter your vacation dates on the "skip delivery" tab of the ordering page.
How are the diapers picked up and dropped off at my home? -
You have the choice of either weekly, every other week, or monthly delivery of your custom order of diapers, wipes, and collection bags (all biodegradable) to your doorstep. Each week we will pick up the soiled diapers. We come on the same day of the week, every week. If you forget to leave out your soiled diapers, don't worry. Simply put out all of your used diapers the next week and we will take them to to our facility to be composted.
How will I be billed? -
Our service is billed once every four weeks on the fifth day of each delivery cycle. We accept payment by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover only).
I'm moving. Do I have to stop using EarthBaby service? -
If you are moving within our service area, we would like to continue service at your new residence without interruption. Please check availability to see if your new address is in our coverage area. So that we can best meet your needs in the moving process, please call our office at least one week prior to your move so that we can make the necessary arrangements.
How does composting differ from recycling? -
Recycling involves reprocessing old materials into new raw materials, which can later be used to create new products. Glass, Plastic, paper, textiles, and metals are commonly recycled.
-
Composting is the natural decaying of biodegradable organic material, producing nutrient rich top-soil. The composting process occurs normally in nature, but very slowly (measured in years). Industrial composting accelerates the natural process of decomposition by actively controlling the composting conditions (temperatures, aeration, carbon & nitrogen content) that allow aerobic bacteria to thrive, producing the end product in as little as 14 weeks.
I compost in my backyard now. Can I purchase the diapers and do my own composting?
-
Reaching the high temperatures required to kill harmful bacteria and pathogens found in human waste is difficult and inconsistent when using common home composting techniques. To ensure that the soil produced when our products are composted is 100% safe, we only offer our diapers and wipes as part of our inclusive service whereby the products are composted in our regulated industrial composting facility.
I have two children. Do I have to pay the service fee for each child? -
The monthly service fee for delivery and composting applies to your entire household. Simply choose the appropriate recurring order for your family's needs.
Note: This applies to a single family at one delivery address.
Is composting human waste safe? -
Composting human waste is safe, but only when done properly. Our diapers are composted at elevated temperatures to ensure that any harmful bacteria or pathogens such as salmonella and E.coli are destroyed during the composting process.
What can I put in the collection bag for pickup? -
In order to control the consistency of the materials that we take to our composting facility, we can only accept materials that we provide to our customers. Everything we drop off at your home can be placed in the collection bag - even our packaging is compostable.
Where do I put the dirty diapers? -
Along with the diapers and wipes that we offer as part of our service, we also sell compostable collection bags. Many customers will choose to use our collection bags in traditional diaper containers such as the 'diaper champ'. Alternatively, you may choose to collect your diapers outside in a larger trash bin. Depending on the size of the container you are using, a larger bag may be required. Check our products page for a complete listing of the compostable bags that EarthBaby offers.
